Dentistry

Pets need regular dental care just as we do. At your yearly wellness exam, your veterinarian will take time to talk about pet dentistry while examining your pet’s teeth to determine if a professional dental cleaning is needed. A dental cleaning includes ultrasonic scaling plaque and tartar off the teeth, probing for any pockets under the gum line and polishing to create a smooth surface. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Regular dental exams and cleanings can help to prevent tooth loss, and also can help to prevent serious health problems that can arise due to excess tartar and infected teeth.

It is important to monitor your pet’s dental health at home as well. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, please let us know so we can perform a thorough evaluation of your pet’s dental health and provide necessary treatment:

  • Halitosis or “Bad Breath” – contrary to popular belief, this is not normal in animals
  • Excessive drooling, typically of foul-smelling saliva
  • Appearance of plaque or tartar, beginning along the gum line and extending down the tooth (depending on the severity)
  • Swollen, reddish gums
  • Lack of interest in chew toys
  • Discolored teeth
  • Chronic eye infections or drainage with no exact cause or cure
  • Reluctance to eat (dry food in particular) or reduced appetite
  • Broken or fractured tooth/teeth
  • Frequent, regular sneezing
  • Pawing at or rubbing the muzzle/mouth
  • Abnormal discharge from nose
  • Favoring one side of the mouth when eating
